John Graham-Maw was born in 1968, the youngest of a family of two girls and two boys. He began to study the violin at the age of six, and at nine won a Choristership from Dulwich College Preparatory School to King's College Choir School, Cambridge. During his time there he toured with the Choir to Australia, visiting eight major cities, under their Director of Music, Philip Ledger. As a member of the Choir he often appeared as soloist in the Choir's recitals, visiting Bruges Festival in 1979 and 1981, Windsor, Aldeburgh and King's Lynn Festivals in 1980 and 1981, and singing the part of the boy Nicolas in Britten's "St Nicolas" Cantata in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1981. In July 1981 he gave his first solo recital in the City of London Festival, and returned in 1982 to take part again in the highly successful series "Baroque in Blackfriars". He became Head Chorister of King's College, Cambridge, on Easter Day, 1981, leaving to take up the 1982 Adrian Boult Music Scholarship at Westminster School, to continue his musical studies under the Director of Music, Charles Brett.
