James Jirtle

treble boy soprano

James Jirtle (James Vernon Jirtle) comes from Durham, North Carolina, USA. He began the study of the violin at age four with Dorothy Johnson Kitchen and he currently is a member of the Chamber Ensemble of the Duke University String School. At age six, he was accepted into the Boychoir of Duke University Chapel and began formal study with James H. Lazenby, his present vocal coach. When the Durham Magnet Center for this Visual and Performing Arts was opened in the fall of 1995, he was enrolled, and continues as a member of the class of 2002. Under the direction of Scott Hill, he is a member of the Chorale at the Magnet Center. He began piano study with Kathryn Cain Parkins in 1994 and presently continues with James H. Lazenby.

James has appeared as a soloist in performances of Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Duke Chapel Choir and the Raleigh Oratorio Society. In 1995, he sang the title role in five performances of Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors at Duke University. And, on several occasions, he has been invited to appears a soloist in Duke University Chapel, including appearances with the summer choir, at a traditional Christmas Eve service of lessons and carols, and on 21 May, 1995, he was guest soloist for the principal University worship service.

In 1997 James earned the highest honor given by the RSCM to a boy-chorister, the St. Nicolas Award, after scoring a perfect 200 on the vocal and liturgical exam. In addition to earning musical honors, he has been cited by the SAT
Talent Identification Program and appears regularly on the Superintendent's A Honor Roll.

In 1998 James started a full-service website-design company.

His CD 'Lift Thine Eyes' was released for Christmas 1996. James Jirtle sings with a pure, English choirboy style voice. I am very fond
of the CD. James sings on every track, mostly with organ, sometimes a capella. On "Sicut rosa" James sings a duet with himself. On
"Lift thine eyes" he sings all three parts.
