Hill - England, UKDavid Hill, who plays "Tony Parsons", is the latest of a
long line of virtuosi to start his acting career in CORONATION STREET. Peter
Noone (Herman of Herman's Hermits) and Davy Jones of the Monkess are just two of
the famous names which have appeared on the credit roll of Granada TV's
long-running serial. But David's background-and his future-are decidedly
different. David, from Stanwix near Carlisle, is a first year boarder studying piano, organ, and violin at one of the oldest and best-known schools in Britain-Chetham's Hospital School, Manchester. As the school is virtualy on the doorstep of Granada's Manchester studios it seemed the obvious place to go for a boy organist. The school suggested David and within a few weeks an audience of 20 million were fllowing his screen adventures and listening with undisguised pleasure as he demonstrated his musical ability to a discerning Ena Sharples. But his first television role could well be his last. As David says: "I like CORONATION STREET and know the characters well but I have no plans to pursue a TV career. I want to teach the organ." — Sleeve Notes David Hill is the Organist and Master of Music at Winchester Cathedral and one of Britain's leading choral directors, in demand both at home and abroad as a choir-trainer, orchestral conductor and organist. He was educated at Chetham's School, Manchester, where he studied violin, piano and organ. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists at seventeen, winning five prizes. He was Organ Scholar at St John's College, Cambridge, for four years under Dr George Guest, and studied the organ with Gillian Weir and Peter Hurford. He went on to Durham Cathedral as Sub-Organist, moving in 1982 to take up the post of Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral in London. Since October 1987 he has been Organist and Master of Music at Winchester. In 1986 he was appointed Associate Conductor of the Philharmonia Chorus, as well as being Director of the Royal College of Music Chorus in London. Since 1988 he has been Director of the Waynflete Singers in Winchester and is now also the Artistic Director of the Philharmonia Chorus, the first British conductor to hold the post. David Hill frequently conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in both orchestral and large-scale choral works. He also works with the BBC Singers regularly, both in broadcasts and live performances. In 1995 he conducted the Winchester Cathedral Choir on two extensive tours of the United States and Australia, where they performed music from Taverner and Weelkes to Rheinberger, Britten and Gorecki. — Hyperion Records In 2003 David Hill was appointed Director Of Music at St Johns College Cambridge
